We are very proud to tell you that Paul Flint and Company were featured in this Saturdays Guardian Newspaper, Life and Style Magazine — 16th January 2010 — on a project we undertook in 2009.

Take a look at this link to the Guardian,  the property is owned by Pippa Blake, a talented artist living on the picturesque Chichester Harbour.  We were extremely enthused by this project which allowed us to highlight our project management abilities, design and follow through with the bespoke joinery throughout the house.

The brief was to convert an existing 1960’s bungalow to an ergonomic open plan and more economical home. The specification was put together by Eric Guibert from architects Sens, who we worked very closely alongside.

Oak flooring was laid throughout and Birch ply was extensively used for the joinery, finished in Osmo paint.  A Mass concrete work top was used for the kitchen. The building itself is clad externally in a very novel way - Concrete !

Storage
Some obvious but important advice here.

• Keep dry and out of sunlight, a dry shed is ideal Sunlight will cause condensation in the bag and impair the quality of the briquettes.
• Damp briquettes will be difficult to light and may cause smoking.
• Our briquettes are suitable for use on open fires, AGAs, woodburners, outdoor chimneas, etc.

Lighting Them
We have found that the easiest way to start the fire is using screwed up paper, kindling and/or a firelighter block, with a few briquettes on top, to start off.

• When the fire is going, top up with briquettes as necessary.
• Never over-fill your fire basket or woodburner.
• Never close off the air supply, as the briquettes need air to burn. but best to keep low

Although the briquettes seem small, never add more than you would with normal logs, as overheating may occur and you may damage your stove, fireplace or chimney! (Burning with heat output of between 5.8 and 6.2 kw per kilogram compare to 3.2 of logs and 6.2 of coal).

• As the briquettes burn hotter than normal wood, it is best to add small amounts regularly.
• Although the briquettes are very dry and should not cause sparks, we still recommend use of a fireguard for your safety.

For the first time we were at The Petersfield Farmers/Christmas Festival it was a great success selling our carbon neutral briquettes to make everyone’s winter warmer, saving the pennies and helping the environment.

Everyone is well aware of the environment and the environmental impact of modern living. Most people know wood is a sustainable source being 100% renewable, but we at Paul Flint & Company have taken that knowledge one step further. We have invested in a new wood shaving extraction system thus helping make the workshop a friendlier environment. This system enables us to recycle our wood shavings, dramatically saving waste, which we then compress into timber Briquettes providing a sustainable resource. The resulting briquettes provide an efficient and economic fuel source which is good news for households keen to reduce fuel bills whilst keeping warm.

Burning briquettes as a fuel completes a natural cycle as on combustion they only release as much carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere as was originally absorbed by the growing tree during photosynthesis. They are a natural product, containing no additives, preservatives, glues or binders.

Briquettes have many advantages over traditional firewood/coal:

Not only does this give you a feel for the type of work that’s being undertaken but it will also give you an appreciation of the craft and technologies involved.

On site we also have examples of quite a wide range of the variety of work that we undertake this includes kitchens, solid flooring ,windows and doors . Also giving a feel for the general way we go about designing and fitting out the items that we have made in our workshop.

On the 7th December 2008 P Flint & Co reached the landmark of 10 years continuous employment. Sean has been with us for 10 years –not one day off– and seen many a change , as well as helping us move workshop from Froxfield to Hambledon.

In order to celebrate the event in style and a kick in the teeth to the current economic crisis, we –the whole team– all met Sean for a surprise slap-up meal at The Old Thorns Golf and Country Club, Liphook. A great night was had by all. Sean had the whole weekend there, slightly wet but he managed to squeeze in a few rounds of golf and he and his wife were thoroughly pampered by the massaging, sauna, swimming and good food and drink. This meant that Sean came back to work on Monday 1st December fighting fit and raring to go. (for the next 10 ! ) Hopefully it made such a difference that he can single handedly turn the recession around, so it just shows in every cloud there is a bit of a silver lining.
